New York City is often called the City of New York or simply New York. It is the most crowded city in the States. NYC is located at the southern tip of the state of New York, while the city is the centre of the New York metropolitan area which is one of the most crowded urban agglomerations around the world.

With a U.S census which was carried out in 2015, population of 8,550,405 was distributed over a land area of 305 square miles. It is considered to be the most densely populated major city in the United States. New York City is a global power city, which is it exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education and entertainment.

New York is an important centre for international diplomacy which has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.

New York City is situated on one of the world’s largest natural harbours,which especially if you are visiting New York City for the first time is a must visit. New York City consists of five boroughs, namely Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island. These five boroughs were all reinforced into a single city in 1898.

Around 800 languages are spoken in New York City which makes it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. By estimates held in 2015, the New York City metropolitan region remains by far the most populous in the United States as defined by the Metropolitan Statistical Area together with the Combined Statistical Area. 

Many districts and landmarks in NYC have become well known, and the city received a record of around 60 million tourists in 2015, hosting three of the world’s ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013.

Many sources have ranked New York as the most photographed city in the world. Times Square is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theatre District, which is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections and a major centre of the world’s entertainment industry. The names of New York City’s bridges, parks and skyscrapers are famous all around the world.

New York City has been called the most economically powerful city together with the leading financial centre of the world due to Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. The city is home to the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, the world’s two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization.

Manhattan’s Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. It provides continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with around 469 stations that operate.

New York City’s higher education network consists of over 120 colleges and universities, which include Columbia University, New York University together with Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 around the world.
