Manhattan is one of the five boroughs’ of New York City which is the most densely populated borough. The borough is coterminous with New York Country, founded on November 1st, 1683, as one of the original countries of the U.S. State of New York.

The borough consists mainly of Manhattan Island, which is bounded by the East, Hudson, and Harlem Rivers. It also includes several small close-by islands and Marble Hill, a small village on the U.S. mainland.

Manhattan is often referred to as the cultural and financial capital of the world which hosts the United Nations Headquarters.

It is anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, NYC has been named both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial centre of the world.

Manhattan being the home to the world’s two greatest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

In 1626, Manhattan has been historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans.

Even though New York Country is the United States’ second-smallest county by land area, larger only than Kalawao County in Hawaii, it is also considered the most densely populated U.S. county.

With a census-estimated 2015 population of 1,644,518 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles, or 72,033 residents per square mile, it is considered to be one of the most densely populated areas in the world, higher than the density of any individual American city.

As New York City received a record of around 60 million tourist in 2015, many districts and landmarks in Manhattan have become well known. Manhattan hosts three of the world’s 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park and Grand Central Terminal.

Manhattan hosts many world-renowned bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building which is considered to be one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, and finally, parks, such as Central Park. These are all places in New York City where one should visit, especially if visiting New York City for the first time.

Many historical places in Manhattan include Chinatown which incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere and the Stonewall in which is considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement.

The City of New York was founded at the southern tip of Manhattan. It houses New York City Hall and the seat of the City’s Government.

Many colleges and universities are located in Manhattan, namely Columbia University, New York University and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world.
