Best bars for the winter in New York City

Things To Do in NYC

Campbell Apartment

The Campbell Apartment is not well-known amount New Yorkers whose daily routes don’t take them through Midtown. Travellers hurrying through Grand Central every day may even be unaware that one of the city’s best bars is closer than their subway train.

It is located inside Grand Central Terminal, and is the former office of John W. Campbell, who is a 1920s NYC high roller. It is all dark wood and soaring windows together with a big stone fireplace. The highlight of the Campbell Apartment is that it opens at 3pm, so you can easily stop on your way home from work.

Cibar

Cibar is a bar for all seasons. During the summer months, its bamboo garden invites drinkers to linger around. While in winter though, it’s time to get all cozy around the indoor fireplaces. Cibar is located in a townhouse, amplifying the homey feel.

The Dove Parlour

The Dove Parlour was started by a group of friends who wanted to “democratize decadence.” The Dove Parlous is a warm, inviting bar with a tucked-in-a-townhouse kind of feel. It also consists of a fireplace, but instead of wood, light is given off by a tight bunch of tall pillar candles.

Winter signals the addition of a specialty drink to the limited but creative cocktails list namely the hot spiced mulled red wine. Happy hour is every day from 4-8pm, when most drinks are around $6. An attractive feature of this bar is that it is open very late. Mulled wine is served all the way till 4am.

The Auction House

If you’re getting cold on the Upper East Side, then warm up by the fire at The Auction House. Just simply don’t wear any fur, since there is a strict no-fur policy. Even though there is nothing particularly special about the décor or ambiance of this bar, it weeds out rowdier patrons by enforcing a 25-and-older policy on weekends.

Arctica

Cold is entirely relative. Save Arctica for one of those mid or late-winter nights when you think there just can’t be any place colder on Earth. This bar honours Shackleton’s Antarctica expedition. There is lots of warm light and heat which is radiated from a small pot-bellied stove. It is easy to forget you are in New York while you are gathered around the fire.

Zanzibar

Make your way to the open pit fire at Zanzibar to warm your hands, then head over to the bar to warm your insides with some spirits. Cocktails change seasonally, so look for something hot and heavy in the winter and for something light and refreshing in the summer.

Employees Only

To get served at Employees only, you do not have to be on the payroll but simply you have to be able to pay your bill. Along the already warm and cozy vibe that characterizes Hudson Street in the West Village, Employees only is the even more inviting bar that definitely deserves a spot on your winter barhop list.

Firstly, there is the working fireplace, following, there is the creative cocktail list which includes the Kumquat Sangaree blended candied kumquats and allspice with champagne. Finally, there is the slightly odd yet curiosity-provoking fortune teller who holds court reading cards just inside the door.

Huckleberry Bar

Brooklyn is one of the best places in the 5 boroughs to get winter cocktails, due to the fact that there is a mixologist movement growing in Brooklyn that is worth watching. Something you must surely taste is the tequila hot chocolate which is served at the Huckleberry Bar.

LIC Bar

LIC stands for Long Island City, and no, this bar is not on Long Island. It is a 100% nabe bar where even dogs are welcome. Being an outer boro bar has its privileges. There is enough space for a photo booth and a fireplace. So roll in, check out the menu and order your favourite drink.
